Layer Lovin’ ??

You know how I said I was over the whole mustard yellow thing thing in my last post and you totally believed me? No? Well me neither. The truth is, my love for this colour is going to be a lifelong thing, and can’t nothin’- not even a change of season come between us. Being fashionably late to the blogging world, there are so many of my summer looks you guys missed out on in SS18 (*sniffles*), so I simply gave up and stayed in bed with a bad case of the style blues. Just kidding! Your girl certainly ain’t no quitter, so while we’re waiting for winter (can it just hurry up, already?) I simply upped my layer game for an instant summer to autumn style glow-up.

I picked up this gorgeous kimono from New Look a couple of years back, and guys… I’m not lying when I tell you I’ve been wearing it to death ever since. What I love the most (apart from the fact that it’s mustard yellow… obviously) is it’s kind of got that 2-in one thing going on; at first glance, it just looks like a regular-schmegular dress… but surprise! It’s actually got this open-front tie waist detail, which allows you to play around with base layers underneath.

Now I don’t know about you guys, but I certainly ain’t about that frostbite life; kimonos may be cute paired with crop tops and shorter skirts in summer, but with that slight September chill in the air, this time? I didn’t really dare to bare. Playing it safe (and warm), I went for a midi-length denim pencil skirt, bought from New Look (similar here). Indigo denim is to me the queen of them all; she’s super flattering, oh-so-versatile, and is her dark wash is ideal for a classic style refresh during the cooler months. As always, this skirt didn’t hug my waist as much as I’d have liked (sigh!), so I added a simple tan belt from Primark for a perfect fit.

With my (not so) mellow yellow poppin’, I kept things neutral up top with a camel rib knit crop jumper. These are a must-have for that ‘can’t quite decide if the sun’s comin’ or going’ weather we’ve been having lately- the fine knit’s sure to keep you kinda cosy, but with the sleeveless design, you’re still in that sweet spot where you’re not crossing the line to being a little too toasty.

Is there ever such a thing as too much mustard? Of course not, so I accessorised with these stunning tassel earrings, bought on sale in AW17.  I felt like these really played up this look’s slight boho vibe, especially when paired with some assorted wooden bangles, which are one of my year-round go-toes. I can never quite resist a good piece of wooden jewellery- something about it is so rustic with a slight African touch, and as a Naija gal, this is definitely a good thing!

You may have noticed how much I love my colours (especially brights!) so I know better than anyone that nothing sets off a warm, yellow hue better than some deep, earthy tones. I was on the lookout for some arm candy to really level up this look, and this simple, but stylish cutie was an answered prayer (thank you, style gods!) The pictures on River Island’s website really don’t do it justice at all- its the most divine, warm cinnamon colour in person (or bag?… Never mind), not to mention for a pocket-sized pal, I found that it was pretty roomy inside. I’m one of those girls who likes to carry around my essentials, plus about a million other items that might come in handy in an apocalypse (you can never be too prepared, y’know?), so I it was a case of seen, bought, delivered- I’m yours!

And finally? All I needed to really bring out that cinnamon kick was a sprinkling of pumpkin spice, and these tan knee-high boots sure sweetened my tea a little (ok.. a lot). These little ladies are both lovely and loyal; I bought them about 3 years back, but guess what? They’re still in stock (shocking, I know), so you can snap up a pair for yourself here (yaaaaaaaay!). There I was thinking there was no such thing as a perfect boot, but guuuuuurl… when I found these beauties? Let me tell you, I had to step back, rethink and have several seats. Featuring a comfy heel height and casually slouchy shaft, they’re that pair you’ll be reaching for throughout winter for tiiiiiiime. Can we also just have a moment of silence to appreciate how beautifully the faux suede fabric and buckle detailing goes with my little brown bag? Issa yaaaaaaaaaaaas from me!

And there you have it; a handy little guide on how to turn your summer flings into long-term loves with layers! See below for alternatives to all the key pieces featured in my post, and don’t forget to let me know what you think of this look in the comments below.

Much Love,
