Not sure about you SWTlings, but I feel like I’ve had a slight case of the post-Christmas blues lately. It may be the fact that sequin season is over, the twinkly Christmas lights have disappeared and it’s a whole 354 days until we get to eat Quality Streets for breakfast, lunch and dinner all over again (*sob!*) And yes, I know they say ‘all good things come to an end’, but talking as the girl who used to cry when her snowmen melted, and when her birthday was over, I don’t know… wouldn’t it be nice if they just didn’t have to? Well, good news: They don’t! Your favourite Angel Godmother’s here to share her top 5 tips on beating the post-Christmas blues with you. Oh, and since nothing keeps blues at bay better than better than than a bit of pink, I put together a little look perfect for any Pastel Angel to-be.
So here goes:
- Set new positive goals for the year ahead. P-O-S-I-T-I-V-E being the operative word. A lot of the time when we set goals (or resolutions) for the New Year, we say things like ‘lose 20kg by summer’- and that’s good. In fact, it might be a great thing for your health… but the implication that you have something which needs to be lost? It’s actually pretty negative, and kinda adds to the feeling that you’ll be a failure if you don’t reach that goal. Instead, switch it up and say you want to ‘get fit.’ Stop thinking in terms of things you have to lose, and start looking forward to all you have to gain instead: running for the bus will be easier, your clothes will fit better, and you’ll have soooo much more energy for all those fun, adventurous plans you’ve made for this year (hooray!) For me personally a goal is to get physically stronger (a.k.a build a lil’ muscle), so I’m back at my fitness peak, which also means: a) I might also get a bit of a booty (#bonus), and b) I can beat up people who get on my nerves more easily… just kidding. Also a bit of a half-tip: don’t give up if you fall into bad habits one month in- you still have 11 more months to get there! Remember, it’s called a ‘News Year’s Resolution’, not a ‘Try-It-Out-For-One-Month-Before-Giving-Up-Resolution, m’kay?
- Speaking of fun, interesting things, here’s another tip for you: Get out more. Ohhhh yes, I’ll admit the introvert in me groaned when I typed this one, but it’s actually really important. Depending on your personality you’ll be in one of two boats- either: a) You’ve just come out of party season: you were out every night till the crack of dawn, livin’ it up with the people you love, or b) You’ve just come out of hibernation season: you spent every waking moment snuggled up in bed with a heartwarming film or a good book… and occasionally ventured out to spend time with a couple of loved ones. Whichever one applies to you, it’s pretty tempting to either go into post-party recovery mode (which means full-on hibernation), or… to just do even more hibernation. But don’t- now is the time to meet up with friends for a New Year’s catch up, join an art or fitness group- heck, just do anything outside. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been feeling kinda ‘blah’, forced myself to go for a quick walk round the block, and come back feeling miles better (though a wee bit chilly!) Oh… and for the love of God, if you’re from the UK, please try to venture outside for the few short seconds where it’s actually daylight (I mean, really- daylight is like gold dust here).
- Wear bright colours. This one might sound crazy and superficial (You’re saying I should wear actual COLOURS that aren’t black or grey in the middle of WINTER!?), but you know what? It actually works! You can’t honestly tell me the sight of this fluffy, pink coat didn’t make you smile a little when you saw it, can you? I genuinely believe colour therapy is a thing; don’t know what it is, but whenever I wear yellow, there’s something about it that makes me feel super sunny and positive (plus, bonus points for the fact that it makes my skin tone ‘pop’)! It’s weird that a colour can have such a massive impact on your mood, but I guess it kinda makes sense- in a season where everything’s very grey, dull and generally ‘blah’ is is really any surprise that we often end up feeling the same?So take the time to find your colour! It may be that you’re feeling pretty in pink, in which case you can try wrapping yourself up in this candyfloss cutie:
Or perhaps where you are, Mr Sun hasn’t come out to play in a while… don’t worry, girl- just make your own sunshine, and you’re good to go!
- Create happy ‘micro moments’ to get you through mundane tasks. It could be something huge like booking a holiday for later in the year, or even something as ‘silly’ as scheduling snack breaks into your day. I’ve actually done this myself, and honestly, I can’t tell you how happy it makes me when that little ‘SNACK O’ CLOCK!!!🎈’ notification pops up on my computer screen (yes, I’m pretty easily pleased). The idea is to give yourself something to look forward to; yes, it’s good to live in the present, but if the task you’re currently doing’s making you feel kinda meh, there’s nothing wrong with picturing yourself snuggling up with a candle on at the end of the day, or sunning yourself on a white sand beach a couple of months from now. Just remember to find, and hold onto those little moments that make you smile, no matter how small they may seem.
If all else fails (which it won’t- these tips are pretty foolproof), do a little retail therapy. I know we’re now at that time of year when everyone’s skint and payday feels like it’s almost as far away as next Christmas, but it doesn’t even have to be anything super expensive! I treated myself to this lil’ shoe and bag combo recently (though on the right side of Christmas, I’ll admit), and just having a quick stroke of this lilac faux fur clutch never fails to make me feel all warm and fluffy inside (it’s ’cause I’m in love). It’s pretty affordable, but you could treat yourself to something more practical like some new cushions to give your home a pretty, pastel revamp, or even a new diary to write down those goal’s you’re gonna smash this year! Whatever it is, no matter how big or small, if it lifts your mood even just a little, it’s a total success…. So go ahead and treat yourself! And there you have it: 5 quick tips on beating the post-Christmas blues from the Angel Godmother you’ve always wished for!
