Scarf print was one of my first loves when it comes to fashion, so I suppose it’s really no surprise that a small statement accessory inspired this entire look.
It all started when I came across these beauties from Mango last year (I say ‘these’, but well… I’ll explain some other time), and my whirlwind romance with handkerchief hoop earrings began. Fast forward a few months, and the Mango pair (ahem) weren’t really doing it for me… but then I spotted these at Pull and Bear, and hello? Talk about a major upgrade!
I absolutely love the primary colour palette on the ‘handkerchief’ fabric and wanted to keep the focus on the earrings, so I paired them with a simple denim pinafore dress, bought from New Look a while back. Indigo wash is such a classic, inter-seasonal denim; it’s super flattering and goes with any colour, but I feel like mustard yellow particularly makes it ‘pop’. And that’s where a wide waist belt, also from New Look stepped in; the perfect piece to break up a block of dark colour and create a super-feminine silhouette.
The length and fit of the dress were giving me a vintage vibe, so I thought I’d have a bit of fun and go for a 50s pin-up look. To start, I popped on a pair of platform sandals in my favourite hue (hello, Mustard!), which, with their ankle strap and scallop edging are very old-school glamour.
To me, 50s fashion is all about the bright, bold, and beautiful; of course, I wanted my arm candy to measure up, and this M&S Colour Block bag certainly didn’t disappoint. I’d had my eye on it since the early 50s (or at least it felt that way), and managed to snap it up on sale for just £22… talk about a style steal! Me being me, I added a little extra oomph by wrapping a couple of scarves into a bow around the handle, but even on its own, the detail on this bag is a-m-a-z-i-n-g. It’s got loads of inner compartments, including one for your phone, plus the front pocket is detachable and doubles up as an envelope clutch. Forget just one piece of arm candy- you’ve practically got yourself a whole sweet shop!
To top everything off, since it’s said that a woman’s hair is her crowning glory, I chose to style mine in a 50s pompadour, accessorised with a scarf from ‘Mum’s Boutique’ (you can never have too much scarf print, right?), then added a slick of red lipstick. And there you have it: 50s styling for the modern muse.
